I think even the early 60s had timed phone calls. I do recall into the 70s calling the next county was long distance. $$. I think into the early 90s out of state was long distance. $$$. Now, unlimited on cell phone phones with the BUNDLED plan.

I was in a Florida tourist trap and the payphone wanted $2.50 for a call to the next adjacent town. I called my long-distance service in Iowa and made the call for 10 cents.

Nancy’s strategic genius is remarkable. Moving two of her pieces to white squares is unorthodox. Making all the pieces the same color is intriguing. Putting captured pieces on a stick and eating them is pure Nancy. She likes to eat!

Where I grew up almost everywhere was a long distance phone call, including my high school. You did not call anyone unless it was really important. Today I still have trouble making phone calls to my brothers in other cities more than twice a year and I almost never spend more than 3 minutes on any phone call despite long distance charges no longer existing.

The one good thing about cell phones and VOIP phones is that the ability to talk with far, far distant folks is so much more cost-effective.

I remember how back when I was very, very homesick while at college, how horribly measured and minimal it felt that I could not call my family more than perhaps once a week for perhaps up to 10 minutes…. because long distance charges beyond that 10 minute mark were beyond what my limited budget could accommodate. So much nicer now for kids…. and with visuals too!

    $274.43

An item that cost $25.70 in 1950 would cost $274.43 in 2019.

$25.70 from 1950 would be worth almost $300 in 2021, so I don’t really blame Fritzi for being mad at Nancy.
