Marm probably saw them getting dressed. When I start getting dressed my dogs go to the living room since they know I close the bedroom door and they can’t stay in there.
For our dogs it was we dressed differently, I’d grab my pocketbook, and some other hints we give them, depending on the dog! They are smarter than many humans I know!
Once my wife and I were discussing taking the dog for a walk, in normal conversational tone. We were saying how we need to find her collar before we can take her. The dog came into the living room with a collar in her mouth. Unfortunately it was for the other dog and was too small for her. Still, pretty scary!
