Let’s just call it an incentive.

I have two teachers in my family. They both have had parents call with this same complaint.

Yeah – my wife (who is a teacher) phrases it that you earn the grade you get, she doesn’t give it to you.

Old cartoon I recall had the kid telling the teacher, “I don’t want to scare you, but my Pop said that if my grades don’t improve, someone’s gonna get a whippin’.”
