The literature pit has more room for boring stuff.

This used to be me, then I got old and cranky. It’s great! I no longer feel compelled to finish crappy books.

SALLYLIN is right! Not only do I not finish crappy books, I only read what I like.Say farewell to the critics “Must Read These Books” lists and hello Manga and all the Faith Baldwin novels the library stores in the basement. No obligations here!

I’m with SallyLin and CeeJay on this. It took me decades to be able to step away from a book I didn’t like. But now that I am older and wiser (and crankier), if a book doesn’t catch and hold my interest, I don’t bother with it. Unless it is a book for my bookclub and then I feel a bit of an obligation to finish it, after all the other ladies finished the SciFi book I made them read.

Also in the “Life is too short to read boring garbage” club, although I will sometimes skip to the last chapter just to see if there was any conclusion.

I wish I could say that. I just (finally) finished Pride and Prejudice. I suffered through that thing for almost a year.

So you actually break out in hives when you read a bad book?!

What I make it a point to do is use two bookmarks. I designate a spot in the book (say, every 50 pages) and plant one bookmark. The other is to mark where I actually am in the book. Once I hit that set mark, I’ll stop and read a few pages of something else for a while in order to keep any one thing from getting stale.

And then there’s me, the guy who couldn’t even finish even a quarter of a non-graphic novel/book no matter how short it is.
