Alex: You know, I'm beginning to appreciate my dad more...He'd always have sensible advice, try to protect me from myself. He didn't always succeed, but he was a good corrective. Well, college is a time of beginning to understand our parents as individuals – ourselves, too. Alex isn’t rejecting J.J., just appreciating Mike.

And all kids are not the same. I didn’t rebel against my mother as a teenager, and when my father abandoned the family, I couldn’t distance myself from him fast enough. I was relieved to be able to easily stop using the last name he gave me as anything but an initial in the middle of my signature when I married.
