Bernice figured it out right. her half of the date is DOA.and she only got herself to blame for. Luann adapted to caveman’s kind of fun and she’s having some. well, as long as he doesn’t try anything funny with her she’s fine with him. Bernice doesn’t go looking for fun, she’s waiting for it to come to her…….. keep waiting, Bernice, Love “by the book” is not love.

Luann is having fun, Bernice, take notes…

Well, that didn’t last long. Gotta hand it to the Evanses for the misdirection about how Nil and Bern would hit it off. They even had this old grouch fooled for a day or so. But they can only pull that trick once. It won’t work next time.

I agree that Luann and Jack really are two nuts who really enjoy each other. Totally silly. Whether it is anything more than that remains to be seen. As for Bernice and Nil, well I reserve judgment. He likes asymmetrical things like Tim Burton movies, which are good, but weird. I am not sure what Bernice would like, but apparently their differences does not mean they would enjoy each other. So she remains up in the air, while Luann is actually up in the air. So there it is!!

He kinda jerk.

Luann is the single worst part of the comic. I wish it could be called something else to take the focus away from her. Her stories drag the entire comic down, kill the momentum set up by any storylines left behind to focus on her and it’s just a damn shame.

I sort of see where Luann is coming from these days.

She doesn’t especially want another serious relationship, because she builds it up in her emotions and has unrealistic expectations about perfect bliss. Then when her expectations are not met, she has a loss, and may even dump it to avoid further pain.

On the other hand, having some non-serious fun with a dork is quite acceptable to her, because she has no expectations about it for the future.

It’s disappointing to see Bernice give up on a possible friendship with someone different so quickly, after she was willing to spend so much time trying to get close to someone else just as different and mysterious (Piro).

It’s also disappointing that there are so many posters here who delight in spoiling everyone else’s few minutes of fun by yawping about how much they hate the viewpoint character. So, who’s forcing you to read this?

Bern and Emo do not seem to have any trouble talking to each other. Perhaps their night might turn around and surprise us…

I never really thought Nil and Bernice had anything in common – she’s way more conventional than he is. I did think they’d take a little more time to see if they shared any kinds of interests – of course, the week isn’t finished yet.

So Bern & Nil have the classic nerd problem – lack of any ability to wade into small talk. But the next best thing is to invite the other to show off their specialty. Bern absolutely should have tried, “So when are you gonna invite me to see a Tim Burton film?” It was really sad to see Bern give up so soon…

I was really hoping that Nil and Bernice would work out. Nil is so much more Bernice worthy than Piro

I’m glad that Luann has found a buddy that she can just have fun with, no commitment, just laughs.

Bernice has never seen a Tim Burton film? Not one? That seems unlikely unless she purposefully avoided his work.

She clearly missed out – at least when it comes to the movies. But besides you dont need something in common to be compatible, just that you show interest in the other.

I suspect the Bernice and Nil are working out, and just don’t realize it, because they have different interests. But they have similar personalities, and neither one is even slightly fake about who he or she is.

How could anyone make it to 18 without leeching?

I remember dating as being an OPPORTUNITY to TRY NEW THINGS! On that score it is like hanging out with friends. So, who cares that Bernice has not YET seen any Tim Burton Films? There are so many good ones. Introduce her to one. I could imagine Miss Peregrine’s School for Exceptional Children being one with which she would identify, or her crying at the ending of the Corpse Bride.

Bernice did not expect to like silent films, either, but learned otherwise when she tried.

Nil already has friends who differ greatly from himself, but trying new things and moving beyond her rut has always been hard for Bernice. She had to with Dez and that did Bern good, but otherwise she moves just so far and then plays turtle when facing something new. Who thinks a double date isn’t working out because the people are different? Seriously? It just is more opportunity to learn and grow.

When I bump into people like Jack and Luann, piggybacking and horsing around, I get annoyed. That types are distracting and disruptive, do not pay attention to those around them, etc. That is what I think of when I see Jack and Luann. I know Greg is trying to depict them as fun going college kids, but for people like me, that is not what I see. I hope my sons never fooled around that way when he was that age. There are better ways to have fun than resorting to balancing bowling balls on arms and piggybacking. I see this as a couple who do not communicate well, not much of conversationalists, so they fall back on physical activities. So, Luann and Jack likes to have fun, and don’t know how to talk to each other because they are too different, so they horse around instead. I saw that all the time with my friends who were unsure what to do with guys they were lukewarm about.

I am thinking about types of animals i have known and trying to figure out which animals the characters are. Luann today reminds me of a spider monkey, Bernice is consistently a turtle, Jack is a Newfoundland dog, but what about Nil? He has that great sense of humor that bubbles forth once in a while with brilliant jokes, but also explores his dark side… Perhaps a wolf?

The “never seen a Tim Burton film” thing sounds improbable for someone of that age, unless they’re a real sick-in-the-mud, uninquisitive type.

Hmm… as far as we know, Bernice doesn’t have any interests herself (unless we count the just-expired obsession with Piro as an “interest”…?) ;p

If Luann is going to throw her life away with jocks I’d rather she did with Ox, who is a kind, sweet-hearted person.

Gee we never got to see any of them bowl. And it seems like they are the only ones there; they have the whole bowling alley to themselves. Nobody is bowling. Jack just posed with the bowling balls since he can’t fit his fingers in the holes.

Luann seems to be having a lot of fun with Jack. Does this signal the start of her next great romance?

Luann seems to have thrown restraint to the wind and is enjoying an unexpectedly rambunctious date with Jack the Jock. In contrast, Nil and Bernie initially seemed ideal for each other, but thanks to Bee that took a rapid left turn and is now going down in flames, unless there is a very abrupt reversal of the disaster….

Aw, c’mon Bernice. Let go and have a few laughs.

Tim Burton is currently working on the live action Dumbo film, so maybe Bernice can see that when it comes out.
