Actually, except for Sunday and Monday they’re named for gods. The English names for Tues- Fri are based on the Old English equivalents for the Latin gods Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus (Saturday is still named for Saturn in English though), and the planets are named for the gods.

Day-names preceded planet-names. Caulfield’s implied arrow of causality goes in the wrong direction.

Tuesday, Wednesday Thursday, Friday. Norse gods, not planets.

While the comments so far are all correct, I think they are missing the point. Especially in light of today’s subject matter, it seems none of you can see the forest because of all those trees.

Mrs. Olsen should have picked up on that. It would be a rare chance to take Caulfield down a peg or two, which would be good for him from time to time. Of course, Mrs. Olsen…well, is Mrs. Olsen. Why didn’t Frazz get it? Hmmm, could the root cause be ignorance 0n the part of the cartoonist? It weakens the joke a lot.

They eventually derive from planets (although it would be more accurate to say that both day names and planet names derive from gods.) The names are the Norse equivalents of the planet-gods. Tiw=Mars; Woden=Mercury; Thor=Jupiter; Frigg=Venus. They maintain the names of the Roman gods in Romance languages. For some reason, Saturday kept the name of the Roman god.

Is he suggesting we have trashed so much of earth that we devote only the one day to earth out of shame for what we have done to it, while we haven’t yet had time to trash the sun/moon/planets/gods namesakes?

Well, don’t worry. If that’s accurate, it’s only a matter of time.

There’s almost certainly a whole lot of water under the surface of Saturn’s moon Enceladus and Jupiter’s moon Europa, and NASA is developing strict protocols to avoid contaminating any life forms that might be there with crud from Earth. If only the rest of the world has NASA’s sense of ethics!

@bigpuma: She has shown much more depth and compassion over the years than you credit to her. See the strip from 2-8-15, i.e., principal’s comment.
