Those early discs were made of hard, breakable rubber. They played one song per side. You could buy them collected into an album which usually held 12. Then vinyl came along and all 12 were gathered onto one long playing (LP) disc which was still called an album. Then CDs which could play a few more songs. And now one can download single songs or the whole group, still called an album by many.
