    I met a man who wasn’t there.

    And, boy, was he drunk.

Their all chances for us to claim immortality. And yet most “immortals” will eventually become, and forever remain, unknown and forgotten. Despite this we still seek that immortality so that in a hundred years, in two hundred, in three hundred years someone will see our name and go “I wonder who John Doe was.”

It is said you die twice: The first time when you stop breathing, and the second when someone says your name for the last time.

Every now and then, Rat comes up with a right-on philosophy: beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

An alternative formulation: “The void. Suck it up.” Depending on your mood, “it” can be either the beer or the void.

Being forgotten after death doesn’t bother me since I won’t be around to think about it. It’s being forgotten before your death that hurts.

We always live on in the effect we have on other people. That’s why I know that since I spent 30 years as a teacher I can never really be dead. I wish however, the system was set up so that we lived 50-60 good productive years and then just woke up dead one morning. These retirement years all you Monday morning zombies are looking forward to are basically composed of using up all the strength you have in an few hours and spending the rest of the day trying to avoid dying of boredom.
