Actually he was only guilty by association. He did not know that the injured Booth had just killed Lincoln and was only following his Hippocratic oath to help.

One of the descendants of Dr. Samuel Mudd is the newsman Roger Mudd, who years ago worked to bring the true story to light and cleared his ancestor’s name.
