Sounds like someone might keep a “Short Timer” Calendar.

Then what will she do? Some people like their jobs so much they really can’t do much of anything else.

I don’t get it. Does she refer to her education time as a teacher? Then she would be about four years younger.

The problem with retirement, is that you generally have to be old to do it.‘

The way I see it, we should have been able to retire in our 20’s, and then go to work at 60.

So August 30th, 2020 is her retirement date.

Before I retired from my career as an educator I had a countdown calendar on which I crossed off the days towards retirement. I feel your pain, Mrs. Olsen.

And in three years, ten months, and 12 days Caulfield will still be in third grade.

I knew a teacher who worried about what she would do with herself in retirement, even though she was eligible…She figured she wouldn’t like it….Nothing to do……Boring……She had no plans to retire…But then she broke her leg and had to take a year off…….She says she loved it….She retired the next year…..

Teaching can wear you down….The administration, the parents, the behavior of the kids, lack of material and tools to teach, meetings that, over and over, accomplish nothing at all….Pressure to get a Master’s degree, in addition, you have take additional college classes to get decent pay raises…I’m a teacher, but I’ve been mostly single, most of my life….I have no idea how a person with a family does the job…..Many times hours of work at home…..Like many jobs, it follows you home….But substitute teaching in a rural district is kinda cool….The regular teacher makes the lesson plans, The kids behave, and the parents respect you…. And the staff is just happy you’re there…

My father had been an elementary school principal for many years but decided to go back into the classroom. He found teaching had changed much for the worse since he had been a teacher many years before and he quickly burned out and retired. I had originally thought to be a teacher myself but when I found myself in a classroom trying to divide my attention between thirty plus children, I quickly realized it was not the career for me. My career since college has been various office jobs. If I could go back in time to when I was 18, I would go for a degree in library sciences. I love books!

My question is, why is she waiting until she’s 85 to retire?

Was at a “Celebration of Life” yesterday (she made it to 102!) Lots of us old fogeys in attendance. The unanimous decision — retiring was the best thing we ever did!
