Gene and his battle for the tomatoes of his youth (and mine). I miss flavorful tomatoes.

Now, now. If not for the miracles of science, the tomatoes wouldn.t arrive bright red at your supermarket and remain that way for two weeks. Thank you Dr Science.

Hey, lots of guys are lousy at choosing birthday presents. It never hurts to drop a little hint every now and then.

Try to find some heirloom tomatoes for good flavor. The drawback is they are more prone to diseases and problems with heat than the newer hybrids. I bought a German Queen this year. The 2 tomatoes I got from it were wonderful, but the heat got the rest. It has a few blooms right now, so I’m hoping to get a couple more.

Some years ago I had occasion to visit a nursing home patient, and in the parking lot outside I saw my first Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. What a disappointment - that was one of the ugliest cars (in reality) I had ever seen, and my initial impression was “I wouldn’t have one if someone gave it to me free”. I wouldn’t even want to drive one around. Reminded me somewhat of a cheap version of a Volvo.

agreed - homegrown, heirloom or not, are the only real tomatoes
