The Valedictorian and Salutatorian at our local school both had averages over 100% at our local school. How? They do 100% and then are allowed to do more than required (extra credit) which goes on their records.

Some students graduate with 4.25+ average because as cdward said, they get extra credit and/or do college courses. First time I seen it I thought it was a typo, but it’s getting pretty common in Michigan.

After reading about and seeing high school grads who are functionally illiterate, you have to wonder about the grading system. Maybe an A-double-plus is a college admission killer.

It’s possible to go up to a 5.00 these days with weighted grades.

At my daughter’s High School, AP and IB classes (college courses) are graded on a higher scale (up to 5.0) so it is possible to graduate with more than a 4.0 average.

@Nabuquduriuzhur: In my high school’s GPA system, an A was 5.0, Bs were 4.0, etc., and some classes were weighted, adding something like 0.05 to your GPA per weighted class. I graduated with somewhere around a 5.2 or 5.3 and was still fourth in my class. That’s still not as weird as my junior high (different school district), where an A+ was (I think) 12, A was 11, A- was 10, etc. It was kind of messed up, especially since different teachers had different standards for what got a + or -. (For one teacher, only 100%+ was an A+, for another 98+ got an A+, and so on.)

Isn’t the grade what student’s would be in called Gifted? Scoring that high?

Argue over the percentages all you want. I remember (now) getting a nice number of those A++’s: pleasant experiences all.

It was the B’s (let alone lower) that made me want to commit hari-kari. And my aptitudes being what they were, I had enough of those to drag my average down more than I liked…

I had a 3.9 grade point average. That 1 B almost did me in. I feel his pain. LOL

In my school, you can have a 5.0 average. if you’re in honors classes, you get more in your average than you would for the same grade in a normal class.

For example, an A will give you 4.0 for that class. In an honors class, though, that same A will give you 5.0

I go to a state university, and an A and an A+ are both worth 4 points toward your GPA. The sad fact for all of the obsessive overachievers is that after college, no one ever looks at your GPA.
