Fun fact: The Swedish book 1,001 Books To Read Before You Die (not to be confused with the similarly-named English version) listed itself.

My parents got me a subscription to that book series when I was 7. All About: FamousScientific Expeditions, Rockets and Satellites, The Human body, Great Inventors and their Inventions, The Solar System, The Dinosaurs, Chemistry, Electricity. Made me want to learn much more than my schoolbooks could tell me, and had me asking questions that scared the Hell out of my teachers.

Long years ago, my parents did he same. Good series. Kept me busy reading and taught me some stuff too. Reading is a good habit to get into.
