For a couple of days before Obama’s arrival in Britain an Osprey aircraft was doing manoeuvres over Langley & Windsor. They got low enough to set off car-alarms (my nephew and mother ’s accounts who live in Langley). I was about 3 miles from Windsor in Burnham when Obama popped into Windsor castle via helicopter to see queenie for her birthday… So I got to see Marine 1 in actual flight, with a couple of escort ’copters. Loud.
Obama made a personal plea for unity as the continent faces an uncertain future, casting a fractured union as catastrophic to global markets and stability. Obama’s speech in Germany came eight years after his 2008 speech to a 200,000-strong crowd in Berlin that greeted him rapturously. But the Europe Obama addresses now is starkly different. Eight years ago, amid descriptions of old-versus-new Europe, many on the continent were wondering about their relevance. Today, Europe is questioning its very survival.
