Personal Computers have been around for around 35 years and still have a lot of problems. Now the Internet Of Things is trying to make everything hard to use and unreliable.

Back in the early days of PCs, a power switch did actually cut the power to the computer, the way a wall switch cuts the power to a lamp or wall socket. Then along came the Apple Lisa. The first time I used one, I realized that after I pressed the switch, it still did a lot of cleaning up before it turned off. I realized that if the “power switch” didn’t immediately shut the thing down, it wasn’t really a power switch. It was an “off switch” that simply sent a signal to the software or firmware to shut down. And if it didn’t really switch the power off, it couldn’t really switch the power back on. So to modern personal computers, the power is always on (unless unplugged), although greatly reduced.

There’s a lot of sick people in a cancer cluster in Endicott, NY, where IBM poisoned the ground water, that agree that IBM sucks.

I still have a TRS-80……. pocket computer! I used it as a “cheat sheet” to help me on tests. Teachers thought it was a calculator.
