Left man in suit: Yeah, but his rate severely undercuts ours, so let's play it safe and absorb him into the firm.
Man's sign reads: Bob's Hot Stock Tips $10
Caption: Bob's queasy capitalist system
I knew a guy like Bob, about 35 years ago.Back then, my home town had two regular publications: a daily newspaper (with stories, ads, etc.) and a weekly throwaway (filled with ads and syndicated fillers), run by a guy like Bob.People bought the newspaper. The throwaway was tossed on your lawn, and when you saw it, usually tossed out. When a big newspaper chain started buying things up, they bought both of them because they saw them as competition. They didn’t realize the throwaway’s profits were mostly in trade (like a case of scotch, and free rental car) given to the guy who ran it.They guy who ran the throwaway was promoted up and put in charge of the daily newspaper.
Reminds me of a story about three guys, each with a hat, who were cast away on an island. When they were picked up a year later, they were all rich from trading hats.
DiminishedFirstNo it isn’t. Capitalist economics inevitably results in plutocratic government. All have their downfall. The best is co-operation, but it can be killed by the apathy of its members. Socialism must balance between becoming agents of the party in power on one hand, or little capitalist empires on the other. Communism (from each according to ability, to each according to need) is adequate for a minority system – if you take what you need but don’t contribute what you can, then out you go; but for a majority system, that involves criminal sanctions and you have instant tyranny. Eternal vigilance, etc.

Paraphrasing Winston Churchill: “Capitalism is the worst economic system, but it is better than all the others.”

Offer him stock options in the company. That’ll let you know if you should be searching for a new job.

Sad how many people can’t tell the difference between capitalism and cronyism. Hint: What we have isn’t capitalism.
