That was a rather quick vacation for the DeGroots’ daughter and her friend. I was expecting more.

I’m sure all the doomsayers who expected muggings will be disappointed, along with all of those who expected Quill to show up.

I’m just kind of sorry that they never ended up doing something that gave them ideas about other ways they could spend their lives…

It will be fun hearing how they describe different aspects to various people.

Airman, late yesterday i might have found that relevant ref you asked about on doing vs. being, and left it in the comments section there.

I know that story arc seemed short to some of you, but it’s actually been going on for three weeks.

It’s late April. Some universities are starting finals in a week or so.

I am disappointed only because this storyline probably had the longest buildup of any in the strip’s history..Maybe Greg and Karen will do a longer version as a bonus story in the next reprint book.

No Statue of Liberty. No Empire State Building. No Central Park. NO visit to the memorial at One World Trade Center.

But we DID get to see the subway! OOOoooooooooo……

It almost feels like today’s strip was intended for NEXT Monday. That was a long way to go for an over-nighter.

This was a most disappointing story arc from a strip that usually offers better. I feel like I spent a week in New York and saw nothing but a restaurant, a nightclub, and a tiny hotel room.

I think the length of this arc was fine, and I am ready to get back to what the Evanses do well – relationship drama. I just think the plotting was weak for this storyline. Looking in hindsight, they probably trapped themselves, because any major new development would seriously detract from the energy of budding relationships that have been left hanging. . Got wordy there, sorry.

I’m quite sure they will tell Pru all about it. Bernice seems to be talking about several things they did that we didn’t see. And given the limited funds, I’m not surprised they didn’t stay a whole week but made the most of the time they had. Hey, they’re young and can go all day. And night.

8I am glad Bernie and Luann seem to have had a great time overall on their trip! It is nice to see that being depicted upon their return. I like how they BOTH are very willing to discuss/describe the vacation with Luann’s parents too. Interesting to note when you compare “English” Luann and “Spanish” Luann… in the English version, the word bubbles of Luann and Bernie overlap but both show completely as in a Venn diagram sort of arrangement. However, in the Spanish version they do not. I liked the “Venn diagram” idea being purposeful to show how Bernie and Luann were talking over each other. But now I wonder if it was just an error? Although, reading through as best as I can the Spanish version, it looks perhaps like the translations of Bernie and Luann dialogue are more separated than in the English. Perhaps that is why the English has the Venn diagram look and overlaps a lot, and perhaps why the Spanish version does not.Keeping in mind that we have only seen glimpses of the NYC trip, the one thing that seems a little bit odd to me is how we had three whole comics featuring their hotel room. I was presuming that with three comics focused on the interior of the hotel, that we had at LEAST one more week of NYC or possibly even two more weeks.

A typical Luann story arc nowadays consists of much build-up and then only a little (or often, absolutely nothing) actually delivered. This time there was at least some pay-off, since we did get to see that Koreans eat weird food and that NYC hotel rooms are really tiny! Of course, the intriguing mentions of “Killer”, “Muncher”, and “The Museum of Sex” have all vanished into the ozone. It seems to be characteristic of the strip in recent years that it sets up a story line, then apparently the creators can’t think of a good resolution for it, so they simply walk away from it (or blow it up, in the case of the food truck!). This certainly seems strange, for a strip that is supposedly written far in advance of its publication.

I suppose we need to get back to the Fuse story line now, since having painted themselves into a corner there (spending several months with Mr. Gray’s “I shall ask you for a favor in February” hanging over their heads) and then resolving it in the weakest possible way (“Give my nephew a job”, a mild request indeed, and something he could have perfectly well have asked explicitly in the first place instead of waiting until February to tell them what it was), Team Evans will now have to make at least some use of it. Maybe Les knows Johnny Depp!

Oh, shoot. I accidentally deleted my reply about ballooning in the past when Denny F had Yellowstone Balloon Adventures here in NJ, before it possibly changed hands (understandable since he is about our age) and did change name. I hope you got to do some tree topping (flying very low over tree tops)! We stopped when my autumn and spring allergies got too bad. Now that it might be a full time business we will have to see if they do winter flights.

… and I just realized that we got two weeks of the NYC story arc, if you count the plane trip and hotel check-in..Now, I’m really disappointed, because that was so unsatisfying that two weeks seemed like one.

Ohhhh, here is an idea. Bernice and Piro discuss the Silent Clowns. Bernie mentions that the people she met there know Piro well, and that he is in Pitt as a film student w hopes of doing a silent film as his thesis. All his spare money is being channeled into that project. He asks Bernice to help crew (NOT unbelievable; i did a bit of crewing for two small time groups w/out having background, Steve did for one before me, and we knew a student who later did for a Will Farrell movie as her first experience), and to be an extra in the movie. Tiff might be asked to volunteer as a MUA unless Piro feels pursued by her.

I think what we have here is that we get to see the trip through Bernice and Luann’s eyes. They did some things we didn’t get to “see” (we now they spend a day at some museums, for example), but what’s most memorable to them is the cultural differences (late night dinners, the size of the hotel room), learning how to get around the subway, and their trip to the Club Foote. And let’s face it, a trip to a real night club, one you’re not even supposed to be in, would be memorable for most any fairly sheltered 18-year old.

I might as well come out of hiatus to throw in my 2 cents: To those saying this arc was short: no, it wasn’t. There was a week of strips of Luann prepping and two weeks worth of the trip. It SEEMED short because it ending abruptly and nothing plot altering happened. I found it very disappointing. I was expecting a lot of interaction between L and B and Pru’s wacky New York friends. All we got was a couple of strips at the beginning with Ecstasy. And what ever happened to all the crazy stuff Pru was planning for them? I guess they did that stuff, but they sure didn’t show any of it. Well, so much for that arc. Of course, if I had a vote, I’d say go back to Tiffany and Gunther. Doubt that’ll be the case, though. They’ve been neglecting The Fuse lately and haven’t seen much of Brad and Toni for a while.

… and we didn’t even get to see Ms. Romeo, after going to all the trouble of having a teaser for that character on the 7th..Pru will just have to bring her out here to help at The Fuse so we can see how she looks.
