I am so tired of “if the groundhog sees his shadow it means six more weeks of winter.” Exactly when did it stop being ""if the groundhog sees his shadow it means six more weeks of winter WEATHER." Believe some time in the mid to late ‘90s. Got news folks, It’s always about six weeks left to winter whether or not the groundhog, or any creature touted as predicting the end of winter, sees it’s shadow or not. But it used to be that we were told we could expect spring-like weather early if the groundhog didn’t see it’s shadow. Which is kinda a real shocker with all the camera lights making it impossible for Phil to not see his shadow.

Besides which, the weather will be what it will be weather a groundhog like Phil or Wiarton Willie, or Balzac Billy, or Staten Island Chuck, or any one of a thousand different groundhogs see their shadow or not.

Sun Prairie Jimmy bit the mayor last Feb. 2 and got fired from his cushy one-day-a-year job. Now the city is using a human dressed up like a groundhog. I kid you not.

A groundhog and his shadow are a very famous pair / They predict the weather together, a trick that is rare / Now the one little thing that bothers me whenever outdoors I go / Does my shadow mean springtime, or sixteen feet of snow? / Never know which, I just can’t remember / Will it be warm, or make like December? / The whole thing just confuses me, and that is why I sing / A groundhog’s shadow just doesn’t mean a thing.

Well, checking in from western PA, just for the record, Phil did not see his shadow, so look for an early spring. Huzzah, I think.

I’m still surprised at the number of people who don’t get it. Groundhog Day is a spoof designed to fill in the gray, blah period between the holidays and spring. Kinda like having a “It’s A Gray Tuesday in February Party”
