Ah Quill, you “broke up” with Lu a long time ago. You just didn’t have the decency—-or the balls——to tell her about it.

    -

Or maybe you just thought she’d always be there patiently waiting for you to find some time for her, when you could tear yourself away from your good buddy Pru.

    -

Pity. Unlike some people, I really liked Quill when he was first brought into the strip. Not so much now. If “working on his career” is occupying his every waking minute, then he should be man enough to tell Luann that instead of stringing her along.

I was expecting a resolution in a Sunday strip rather than on a weekday and was not disappointed. Luann and Quill breaking up is sad but necessary for them to keep their own identities. At such a young age, they don’t need to make sacrifices and career changes to keep a romance going .

Ah, a “Sunday Flashback Sequence!” On Valentine’s Day, Yet! Lovely! My, How Our Young Lady has “Matured” through the years, in matters of Love!

1st Lu had CRUSH on Aaron Hill and Pursued Him RELENTLESSLY, despite the Fact that He Barely Knew She was Alive. Poor Lad had to Escape to Hawaii and seek Comfort in the arms of another Gal.

Next was Gunther, a Guy who was (is?) ALWAYS there for Her, helping Her though Tight Spots, Her Homework, even sort Saving Her Life Once. Unfortunately Gunth’s BIG Mistake was “Not Looking Good Enough” for HER. But, the G-Man will ALWAYS Occupy a SMALL Place (That’s Why He got only ONE Panel, Today) in Luann’s Life. Who Knows, She Might NEED Him Again Someday.

Now We come to the Foreigner. Sure He had the “Looks,” BUT Despite the Fact that He came at GREAT Expense from Oz to America Just Be with HER, He made the Unpardonable SIN of NOT Putting Luann FIRST Ahead of EVERYTHING including Breathing. So Its Dumpsville for HIM.

Of Course in EACH Instance, it goes Without Saying the Failures Were All “THEIR” Fault!

But the Future looks BRIGHT for Lu. I for One, Can’t WAIT to See What Happens When Gets Her Clutches on that Creepy Piro, Bernice’s Imaginary Boyfriend!

SERIOUSLY Though, HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY to ALL!And Especially to the Writers of THIS Wonderful Strip!!

Used to read this strip quite a bit, but it got all collegy and too far up the ladder for me. High school was more fun, especially for a cartooning geek like me. Unlike real life, here most of her HS friends are with her in college. Not quite in real life. This strip is losing its touch, with me anyway.

Quill was introduced to the strip as a character with no substance. His only attribute was that he thought Luann was wonderful, and his purpose in life was to be her boyfriend. As soon as he left her presence, he essentially vanished, since he had nothing going for him to support a story on his own. Now that he is developing into an actual character who can engage in personal activities (such as the internship) that aren’t center on Luann, he must be dumped. The part of “boyfriend” in this strip demands being on call 24/7. Bring in the next empty shell!

Same as it ever was. Luann sorely lacks a passion and is unwilling to support and share Quill’s. She could have gone to NY and gone to school there. As for the next year, there has got to be more than Gunther and Luann finding each other and growing old together – in their twenties.

Yeah, Quill was a bit tone deaf. But Luann is still drifting herself. Only random luck will get them together again. I classify this as something that was sad, but probably bound to happen.

As to Piro— I kinda think his part will expand some. But he seems like the kind of guy that can satisfy little parts of more than a few females. But probably not enough of any single one to make a difference.

Well that’s a bummer. I registered after being here for a long time just to comment on this.

I liked the pairing. But once Quill came to NYC his real GF was the theater, not Luann. She was a distinct second. I don’t blame her for being frustrated and I didn’t find her at all clingy. Any time they tried to even talk, the theater interfered. And Quill let it.

As for clearing the field for Gunther; the day they get together (if it happens) is the day I jettison this comic after years of reading it. I find Gunther to be nasty and unpleasant and he has been since he returned from Peru. He’s a man-baby – can’t even bear his mother having a BF and is unsuitable for Luann. He’d actually do well with Tiffany.

Rather disappointed in Quill and this story line.

Hadn’t Quill gone back to Australia then, and they were still “dating” via Skype? His abrupt departure from the USA (on about 10 minutes’ notice) was the ultimate “bad timing” (albeit it exactly the right timing, to keep the strip spinning its wheels for another year).-Luann’s romance with Aaron Hill was also bad timing, in that he too had to move away before things got serious. Of course, in this case it was because the readers preferred him to Gunther (as you noted), and in the Evansverse that is simply not allowed.

I was actually hoping they would have a full fledged fight where Luann said “This thing with Pru bothers me because you’re spending less & less time with me, but you always have time for theater, for her, for anyone else” & for Quill to admit at least once that he was flaking on their plans & then blaming her for not being supportive enough. The breakup was inevitable, but without that conversation it will continue to seem like Luann is the only one at fault & that’s just not true.

Maybe we’ll see Quill talking to Pru about the breakup, and maybe she’ll explain to him how women feel when their guy spends more time with a female “friend” than with their SO. If Pru really is just a friend and there’s no romantic interest, she should see this. I think it would be a nice twist if Pru helped them get back together.

let’s talk about Q, in “real life wise” mode, he is a great match, both are into arts, and like making music and are into theater plus both enjoy and feel comfortable in banter mode…………………. BUT…………. most readers DO NOT care about how they click on real life…………… they want exciting and full of drama characters, and Q is simply in their minds bland, without any colorful past, and seemingly without much fault, thus most readers CAN"T self identify along him, while a lot of readers “self identify” with Gunther ……thus reason so many want G and L together, even thought G is shown in many cases in the past with a small hints of a fiery temperament and likes things “his planned way” and hates when things suddenly are not going according to his “life guide book” …and as I said yesterday, do not be surprised if Pru ends up putting L and Q together again

Luann is growing up. It a lumpy road. On the New Years Eve panel I think she realizes that it’s not about Quill, Quill has his own life to live, just as she has. but (at age twenty) what has she done but looked for others to define herself. she has done lots of “shoulds” Graduate high school, start college, help out her family… I think she is realizing that she now has to start finding herself. She SHOULD be putting herself first at this point. For every choice you make a door closes. Others open, true, but other doors close forever. If Luann were my daughter, I’d recommend that she spend the next two years or so leaving home (at least 500 miles away) go live in or near a REALLY BIG city and trying new things. Go volunteer for a presidential candidate, or become a spear carrier for the Washington Opera society, work in Chicago head start and take classes at Second City. But build your own foundation and make it strong, strong enough to last loss of partners (marriage is no sinecure) health and wealth.

I wonder if one difference in commentors might have to do with their personal histories of comic book reading. Several decades ago there was a study on reading ability. Comic book reading was included. If memory serves we first ran into mention of it in the New York Times back then. It turned out that those who read comic books as kids scored much higher in reading skills. The conclusion was that kids who read comics found the fun in reading and read more. Now, i am not of that generation, but i read a lot of comics in the middle of the last century, and i recall some other aspects then in comic reading which may have impacted how much a person thinks about what has been written and illustrated. Remember the variety in comic types available? We had Classic Comics, Adventures in Science, Metal Men (who had to echo their elements), Mad Magazine (which was a richer experience if kids also read the newspaper, as was also true on the morning cartoons w Rocky and Bullwinkle). We knew that cartooning had the ability to get some deeper ideas across than slap stick and kapowee fight scenes even if our parents had not all realized that. I think that skill as a habit carries over into reading the “funny pages” when we look at varied interpretations of what is happening in comic strips. The authors are so constrained by space that even with very careful wording choices and illustration there winds up being plenty of room for people to see how they interpret things based upon their own experiences, and i think the degree to which they do so is partly based on how much they have had that become the way they read, which in turn may be partly based on how much and what they have read — even back when they were children.

I want to send big thanks to Imp for yesterday posting the link to the Bonus Materials. My personal favorites all illustrated childhood perceptiveness and inventiveness. Ratings certainly are ignored when the purge of the old kind of shows like Green Acres, Petticoat Junction and Beverly Hillbillies were ratings giants yet they were canceled anyway when the PTB wanted to change formats of their shows.

Except that you have it somewhat wrong.

I am a historian of television in my spare time, and I learned long ago that the reason those shows (and Hee Haw along with them) was that CBS felt their demographics had gotten too “unsophisticated”. That much you allude to properly, but the network didn’t ask for changes, they simply cancelled everything with a “rural” theme in 1970-71.

The network was looking for something new, not “fixed” versions of the old. And they got it, in the form of All In The Family, MASH, and Mary Tyler Moore.

There was an article in the Socionomist a few years back that made a correlation between those actions and huge dips in the stock market. Try Googling that.

@seismic2Don’t knock it, I proposed to my wife on April 1. It has been wonderful for the last 36 years and going strong.

This would be an interesting time to bring Aaron Hill back. I would be interested to see what has happened with him since we last saw him.

I’m glad this story line is over – at least I hope it is – but I am sad that their relationship is over. We will see what happens tomorrow.

“The Walking Dead which has real drama and the horrors are just window dressing.”

I’m a big Walking Dead fan, I just love this show because I have become so attached to the characters. The first episode I just happened to see was when Rick’s wife died and I was so moved I cried, which made me start the show from the beginning. When I thought Glenn had died I was almost hysterical and I felt sad for weeks. The character and plot development in this show is phenomenal. You are right; this show is really a character study before it is a horror show. Yay! The new season starts tonight :) I’m gonna check out The Strain now that you’ve mentioned it, I haven’t heard of that one.

Love, man it brings out commentary! Judging from the comments of the last few days, including deep ones on cartoonist motivations and business methods and the muse involved in producing a successful cartoon, GE and company is doing a job the stock market should be jealous of—constant upward growth and interest. Even with all the trolls, they at least show the interest level. On that point I just state my contrary view and move on, because some people just look at he world that way, glass half full, constant criticism, or to use a contemporary colloquialism, are snarky by nature. I would be a positivist, although that has another connotation in terms of being a rationalist, hmmmm… Anyway, I stated my feeling a few days ago that this relationship is coming to an end, but I reserved a possibility that this comic drama may have a misdirection play. Judging from this strip that still may be possible, given its view of the past of Luann’s adventures in love or affection, or affirmation. Quill was the one who reciprocated in a positive way, shown through his Valentine’s Day greeting over Skype while he was still Down Under. Now a year or two later he is here, they have been gf and bf , but now appear ready to break up on Valentine’s Day. Somehow I think there is a fox in the works here somewhere. Getting back up to my my comments about a successful cartoon the dramatic tension, expectation, unrealized possible plot devices, the device that keeps one, troll, or trufan, picking up the paper, or checking the internet listings, or both, is brilliantly done in this strip. Anyway lets AGAIN await developments.

Most of the commenters and observers seem to be getting their wish here. Team Evans often endures a lot of criticism, but appears now they do read the comments, opinions and suggestions. after all.

Well, yeah, I know all the strips are here. Duh. But people seem to be able to find specific strips to post regarding specific questions or statements made here, and I doubt those people are manually sorting through the online library to find them, as there are (including today) 11,292 daily installments.

I have to presume there’s an index somewhere of all those old strips.

So, on this Saint Valentine’s Day, Luann DeGroot realizes that she is and always has been Unlucky In Love, and splits from the Aussie actor. Ah, well, Quill, we hardly knew ye….

I don’t think I’m making myself very clear.

I know all the strips are archived here on GoComics. But I also know that on numerous occasions, people have been able to find exact strips to illustrate a post, and I sincerely doubt they haphazardly search all through that archive to find the “right” strip.

The Cartoonist Group (www.thecomicstrips.com) lets one search by topic or keyword or character name and is easy to use when trying to find a recent strip (and then, armed with the date, one can post the strip here by linking to the GoComics archive), but it only goes back around seven years.

What I want to know is if there is something like the Cartoonist Group archive covering the entire 30 years of the strip, because there sure seems to be …

Ehhh, nice try, no prize. Not close enough to be a good match for a comment. The song is 100% about two phonies, two losers, who have proven their lack of drive for success. Right now, we don’t have enough detail to make that conclusion here. And if a breakup IS the story line, well, let’s see if you can find a song that fits the reality better. There are plenty of them to choose from!

My opinion? Both instances were highly contrived reactions and overly aggressive in their focus and relentless drilling to make a point. If Sun disappeared (not trying to be funny with the weather image) because Greg figured it just wasn’t worth the time and effort to sustain a new minor and easily disposable character, then it’s an academic win for the challengers. How nice. It’s the 9-11 “outrage” here irked the crap out of me, though. There’s no way Greg was going to dishonor the legacy of that day, but all I kept reading about was the big party that shouldn’t happen.Allow me to drift off topic slightly to explain why some of us take offense to terms like “Trufan” and other monikers that suggest we blindly eat comic swill. Maybe we trust the cartoonist.Who remembers the arc about Delta’s cancer back in the late 90s, 1998 I believe? This was years before I knew Greg, but Luann ran in my hometown paper, so I knew his work.A small group of high school students, who probably hadn’t done their homework nor were they familiar with Greg’s track record, were up in arms that such a serious subject was part of the funnies. One of their favorite teachers was gravely ill from his battle with cancer. Most pro cartoonists had a pretty good hunch what inspired Greg to create this story. But all these students knew was that cancer was appearing in the comics. Inappropriate. Insensitive.Greg went out of his way to reply to the students, who (if I remember correctly) wanted the paper to drop the strip. Everything settled down and Luann survived. Unfortunately, the teacher did not.Today there is a memorial and celebratory run held every summer in this man’s memory. But there’s a Paul Harvey spin on my message. About 6 years after Delta won her battle, my wife and I lost our 21 year old daughter to a rare cancer that was detected when she was 19, just a few months after 9-11. Long story short. We’re making plans for the 12 annual 5k run and awesome after party party in her memory and for the thousands of kids like her. We’ve replaced grief with celebration and honor. The music is loud, the beer flows, hundreds of baskets are raffled off and the fun is non stop. When the celebration is over, there’s serious donation made to the pediatric division of our local prominent cancer research institute. Every year my town looks forward to the next run and party to remember these kids.Whether 3,000 people die at once in one location from one deadly enemy or whether they die over many weeks in hundreds of different hospitals and homes from another kind of terror, at the individual level loss is loss and the pain is just as real. Greg’s got a heart, I want him to be able to show it in his work if he wishes. Even if he “slipped” I’d know his intentions and motivation were in the right place and I’d want him to take on another important theme.Maybe the 9-11 wedding was moved to 12-11 to play it safe, but I think the whole stink put up here was an artificial exercise, mock outrage and an explicit attempt to spoil the party. If that’s the case then I think we were robbed of the opportunity to see how one of the best in the business would pull it off. Another “win” for the challengers, but really a loss for the rest of us.After a couple of adjustments like this, I wouldn’t blame either Greg or Karen if they never laid eyes here again. Let the driver drive. Over.

I still suspect Luann & Quill will end up reconciling and get back together. Although I do hope the breakup sticks. I think it could be far more fun to have Luann date someone else.

@ sheriff mordecai: A celebration of love on 9/11 would swell my heart, but then, I’m looking to have joy in my heart. This year when we give to the Jimmy fund, we will think of your family. Today’s strip seems like Lu and Quill are finally getting real.

This is a cartoon and faults are exaggerated, but there needs to be some truth in the situation for there to be humor, right?Quill and Luann had a repeated argument about doing things together not often enough for her. Luann wants to do exciting things with a guy—a boyfriend. That isn’t reason enough to have a relationship or to time manage your life.IF Luann can have some insight to the problems of her expectations and relax in meeting and dating fellows (without falling into the compete with Tiffany syndrome), then this arc will not have been a waste.Luann can choose to do exciting things with her life without being on a guy’s arm. She could meet people that way.Yes, it is time to start growing up—just as Brad was allowed to do.
