Hmm. Shades of Back to the Future, a whole bunch of Star Trek time travel stories, not to mention Jules Verne’s original time travel machine….If this were Quantum Leap, could it be that Wally and gang might have the opportunity to help the world avoid World War III?.Of course, in so doing, eliminating the premise of this comic strip, if not the entire strip itself?.Is this the swan song for Endtown?

Okay, so Wally recognizes this as prewar Hillside? I suppose this means that all the “futuristic” stuff is futuristic only for the readers. This opens up a few interesting questions, the top one in my mind involves the mutagen. Aren’t mutants supposed to be the “plague rats” that carry the mutagenic virus (or whatever the plague’s mechanism is? Does that mean that Holly, Wally, Kirbee and Chic are about to start a pandemic? Has the “door” they’ve gone through acted as a “disinfectant” of some sort? If some sort of antigravity or cheap thrust was this common, why were the TS Personal Transporters ground bound vehicles?Aaron, you promised us something weird, you delivered. Still, unlike Captain Steve Rodgers, I’m not ready to give you your $10. (See “The Avengers” for details).Merry Christmas

I believe Aaron has said before that time travel doesn’t exist here so maybe it’s another Hillside… Should be interesting. ;-)

So is it a porthole to the past, or a ditto illusion? Stick with the rest of us readers and we’ll find out…Merry Christmas, everybody.

Chic: “Umm, Mr. Wally, sir. Might I be so bold as to ask you why you weren’t smart enough to grab onto the bug on a string when it showed up through the portal?”Wally: “… Chic, I think today is a good day to learn whether flying really is just a matter of throwing yourself at the ground and missing.”Chic: “Sorry, I’m not a fan of the classics. I don’t follow.”

Reference to “DDC report” and “no need for panic” may imply the mutations are already starting. Given the initial methodology employed to “treat” mutations, this does not bode well for our friends.

Merry Christmas, Aaron.Arriving prior to the event that caused the world to go to dust. Should be interesting, but, when you’re the only fuzzy and scaley people, at some point there’s gonna be calls to animal control, and vivisections abound…

Endtown carol Last Christmas, by JennerTo the tune of Last Christmas by George Michael(It’s the) last Christmas this city will start,“Cause the very next day, they blow it away. We, too, we’re here with a view,We’re waiting to see what’s coming.(It’s the) last Christmas. This town will depart,And the people of Hillside will call it a day.We, too, but what can we do?We know there’s a storm a-coming.One hundred-odd floors highWe watch our footing, and watch the sparkling sky.Tell me Kirbee, did you need to find me?Well, it’s been ten minutes. It sorta surprised me. (Ka-foom…) I winked out like a stranger.Told you as I left you to stay away from danger. Now I know what a fool I’ve been“Cause you turned up to say:“What danger do you mean?”(It’s the) last Christmas. It’s breaking my heart.,‘Cause the very next day, they blow it away. We, then, we’ll see it again.I know it was something special.(It’s the) last Christmas for culture and art,For the civilized things of nations and kings. This year will all end in tears.I know, I’ve been there already.A window ledge, cityscape night,I’m inching backward, and swallowing fright. My god, I’m lucky I grabbed you and caught you.Your life is the best Christmas present I bought you.I’m here with my lover and I thought we’re aloneWe’re there for each other, ‘til you fell like a stone.(Hoo…ooo), she’s calm, thenYou show up and now she feels like jumping again.(It’s the) last Christmas. Let’s view it once more. The apocalypse from the eighty-third floor. This year, we’ll give it a cheer. There’s going to be no surprises.(It’s the) last Christmas, the sorry, poor fools,As they go on their way, their very last day.My friend, what’s rounding the bendIs going to be something special.I’m here with my love, awaiting fire from the sky.You say I’m your lover – I’m a torn-apart guy. You’ll have my heart, or I’ll give it to her,Or maybe we’ll all be charcoal.

Christmas greetings to all my neighbors here in Endtown.

As far as the story goes: I also remember Aaron saying there is no time travel in the Endtown Universe. However, multiverses have been shown (Where Flask went) and this multiverse just hasn’t has it’s war yet.Like mentioned before, did they bring the mutagen, or is it already present?. I looked closely at the signs and there was something about no need for panic, so it is probably already present.Maybe they’re here to stop Sparkplug from creating his zero weapon in this universe.

It’s an alteenate Hillside, where the war and the mutations are happening later in the timeline?

To add to the paradox comments: IF the mutants are actually plague carriers – then perhaps our trio coming back in time is how the plague actually started…

If time travel doesn’t exist in the Endtown story, then what the heck is going on here? Are they only here “in spirit” a-la Ebenezer Scrooge with the Ghost Of Christmas Past, or is this some kind of trick?

Y’know…if they’ve really gone through some kind of time gate, and if they’re really in Hillside before the Apocalypse…what are the inhabitants and authorities of Hillside going to do when they spot five people who look like a cat, a mouse, a lizard, a chicken, and a cockroach? And do the bear the plague that turned them into these things?

It is possible that different worlds in the multiverse have different positions on the time line. The scene with the Duchess and her version of Endtown in the works had a definite 19th century vibe to it. If we assume that Aaron Neathery’s ban on time travel extends to Aaron Marx then that reality was in the 19th century at the time that Flask died in our reality. Assuming an infinite number of parallel universes with different time lines, its possible that there would be one universe going through this particular Christmas at any given time.

We may get to see what happens when they meet themselves. If they were all in Hillside that Christmas, will they try to find themselves to warn themselves, or avoid themselves to avoid changing their futures in this universe? “We need money…”“Good thing I held onto this ATM card.” ::ATM::“How’d you know that would work?”“I didn’t, but I used to watch Sliders.”

I don’t think they’ll be able to get very far at the present. At the beginning of the outbreak in Endtown’s reality, the mutants were rounded up and and sent to extermination centers like Pep Cola Stadium. Hmmm…I wonder if they’ll run into this reality’s version of Walt? Dottie said he was the “hero of Pep Cola Stadium.”

Y’know, too, they could be pretty disruptive to the space-time continuum, whatever the hell that means. Suppose they keep somebody awake when they should’a would’a been asleep—-and since a “successful” mutation (whatever that means) requires the subject to be asleep, who knows who’ll change into what?Suppose they keep, say, Mallard awake when he mutates? Endtown might not’a survived without his contribution.

My take? The ship is hollow inside, and the table in the deck house is placed in front of a hole leading to the ship’s interior. Everything else is dittos. It’s dittos all the way down.

Another thought. If the dittos can form psychic links with someone, what might happen with these links if you double, triple or quadruple the number of operating dittos within one space?
