I put a sticker over mine. Last winter, mice chewed off the fuel tank pressure sensor wire which turned on the light. The sensor is on top of the tank, and it would cost a half a day of mechanic labor to fix it. We’re not in a county that checks emission systems, so it can just stay on until something else breaks back there that needs repair. My mechanic reads the system periodically to make sure no other fault has turned up.
Our Chevy Caprice patrol cars had an ABS light. According to the manual, when it comes on, you’re to pull over and stop.
We had a running gag about the ‘check engine’ light too. If you write it up, someone would say “Did you you check it?” to which you replied “Yup. It was still there.”
Their ongoing ignorance aside for the moment, many of the cars made in the previous decade were known to have check engine lights go on for something as non-essential as the gas cap not being on tight, or because the emissions system wasn’t functioning at 100 percent. That said, this lot has no excuse. No guarantee of the cause (and as such, no reason to ignore it) and on top of that, apparently no AAA-type Road Service membership to bail them out.

Front and rear licence plates don’t match. This is one of those “spot the differences” cartoons, isn’t it?

A 1/16th inch drill bit will permanently keep that light from coming on again.
