    Nothing like a manufactured shortage.

Johnny Carson triggered a toilet paper shortage one time, back in the early 70’s…

All he did was joke about a story in the newspaper suggesting that there might be one.

People rushed to stores and bought all the toilet paper…

so of course, the next people to look for it found the shelves empty…

    so it must be true!

Carson tried to tell people it was a joke…

but the more of it people bought, the less there was to buy…

until the stores had to limit purchases, fueling the rumors.

Finally the manufacturers were able to catch up with demand and stop the “crisis.”

They complained at the time… but I think they made out like bandits…

The price of toilet paper went up, and has never dropped all the way back down… while roll sizes decreased and stayed that way.

And I’d never seen giant multi packs before that…. a four-roll package was considered large.

Maybe they existed and I didn’t know…. but suddenly everybody was lugging home months worth at a time.
