Shopping might be the most legitimate way to observe labor day. That is the one activity that helps maintain jobs.

When Labor Day began in the late 1880s, nearly everything Americans wore and used was made in the USA. Labor organizations formed to protect workers from the abuses of those who made their fortunes from the labors of those working in factories, mines, and other dangerous environments. Sadly, too many union leaders became certain of their own importance to their organizations and used their positions to garner wealth and power as if they hoped to become equal to the owners of the companies. Today, the majority of the items people will buy at labor day sales will be made overseas and unions have been labeled as nearly anti-American by too many politicians. Unions still have an important place, as proven in the Massey Mine disaster and other industrial accidents. Politicians continue to promote themselves with benefits no other worker in the USA could ever imagine seeing while serving the interests of corporations and organizations, including unions, that pay to keep unprincipled egoists in their ‘tenured’ positions. Our founding fathers warned about money in politics, politicians who stayed in office too long, and income disparity before the year 1800. Politicians never voice those quotes. Respectfully,C.
