Bezos says that is not the Amazon he knows. True! He works in a penthouse office. That is the Amazon he knows.

Just like I would tell the people at McDonalds who want $15….in America you are free to pursue any job you want. Get motivated, get educated, and get moving.

The problem is (and always has been) that the lure of a large comp package trumps common sense when it comes to taking and maintaining a job that clearly will do more harm than good to you. Even when you’re in the thick of it, working ungodly hours, laboring while ill or emotionally & physically spent, the vaunted golden handcuffs keeps you coming back for more. Only if you’re lucky enough to realize how far you’ve been dragged down will you break those shackles. I know all this from personal experience (not with Amazon) and lived to tell the tale.

High tech jobs are not for everyone. A friend and I ran a high tech design business by ourselves for 4 years, working impossible hours. We were eventually absorbed by a larger company that we had been doing work for, moved to 9 to 5 management positions . We both left to get back into hands-on design work. If you care enough about your work you can put up with 7 day work weeks and occasional all night sessions. If you cannot, you leave. It is not usually the money but the corporate culture clash that makes people leave. http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/career-management/tech-companies-have-highest-turnover-rate/

Perhaps, but the irony is if you don’t realize until too late what it’s doing to you (and experiencing unrelenting stress is harmful in the long run), all that money can go toward doctors and hospitals. It’s not worth it, but no one realizes it while in it. At least it wasn’t for me. Some people thrive on it, but if you can’t, you try to save your money while you’re working, invest what you can, and be frugal in retirement and live comfortably. I know those people. The challenge is the saving and the frugality. Depending on your background, values, and era you grew up in, that’s easier said than done.
