Wishing Liz would come? Interesting wish, Garf. The last time he was thinking of a wish, the numerous candles on the cake were still burning smoking up the room (19 June 1996).
Cake is supposed to be a treat. An occasional treat is not going to hurt a normal healthy person. The problem with sugar is when it becomes a regular part of the diet.
But Garfield does get a regular sugar overload. Jon is an enabler, and maybe Liz also.
Of course, it’s only a cartoon. Garfield will probably last 100 years, no matter how much he consumes. Maybe partly because of how much he scarfs-down.
There are cartoon snobs who make fun of this strip, claiming it isn’t funny.
My own opinions are that 1) it is admirable that the strip has stayed so funny for so long, which is a tribute to Jim Davis and PAWS, Inc.; 2) some people are envious of anyone rich or successful; and 3) the snobs suck lemons for breakfast.
