As a teacher, I preferred traditional seating in rows, for all the reasons given in the strip. I got better results as well.

I used work with a fellow who twitched his nose constantly. Sitting across from him at a meeting was like watching a bloody rabbit!

One manager at our weekly meeting used to clean his ears with the pointy end of the cap from his pen………..Finally I had to ask our boss to have a talk with him……it did help, thankfully!

A teacher who uses weird seating arrangements is probably also buying into the idea that it’s more important that you are having fun than that you are actually learning anything. And, probably young and foolish enough to think it’s important to be liked by your students. Thank God there are still enough “don’t smile until Christmas” types to insure that most people graduate from high school able to read.

I hated circle seating arrangements in college. Much harder to hide in the corner compared to traditional seating arrangements.

I agree with Katie. I’m a nontraditional student in college and there’s one classroom where the desks are arranged in a U. I hate it, it’s very distracting – you can’t help but look at what other students are doing. We’re all adults so I hope there’s no nose-picking but you have some who are a little slunk down in there seats, some who like to talk to friends next to them and some who are very quirky. Me? I stay quiet as much as possible.

One of the many things I like about this strip is that sometimes Katy’s word choices are a tad mature (Who ever heard a six-year-old use the word “focus” like that?) but what she’s saying is spot on for her age. Gracie, over in Baldo is like that too, and the best ever example, of course, was Calvin.

When I was in high school and college, most of the desks (if there were desks) were in rows and seating was alphabetical! Once in a while a teacher would show a bit of creativity, and seating would be reverse alphabetical…
