This is the kind of moment we remember in 30, 40, 50 years and say yeah, we already knew our now back then.

I remember the day I graduated from MIT, as well, though it was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. (Well, 1969 in Cambridge.) Unfortunately, I didn’t end up with the young woman who came to my graduation & commissioning (Air Force).

Do we buy it? Lock, stock, and barrel, baby!

Fairpoprtfan2, right on! The US has no business nation building anywhere in the world.

I might be willing to go help a people who have rebelled against an oppressive government, and are asking for help, but let them first prove their desire for independence and\or freedom.

Vietnam should have taught us well, but, sigh, no one ever seems to learn from history, thus letting history repeat itself.

I honestly feel that the Toggle/Alex strips are some of the best work Trudeau’s ever done. There’s a certain idealism to them that offsets some of his more cynical stuff, and I find it very refreshing.

That’s our Mike for ya! Don’t you just love how he’s handling this situation. He’s aleadry bought it… He just wants to make sure his wife is OK with it, too.

Toggle will make a great son-in-law. He’s smart, polite, hard-working…

    …and - best of all - he’s NOT ZIPPER!!!

So much improved triage and field work, so many coming home from stuff that would have killed them a couple wars ago. One of the “good” things that developed from Nam.

My youngest is engaged to a guy with hearing loss from this Iraq war who would go back in a minute if they’d take him. Too many friends still at risk. Toggle seems the same way.

Maybe a bit of a flash forward? I don’t remember Mike with the ‘touch of gray’ before. I can understand the surprise at ‘Alex never interrupts?’ though.

Can’t wait for the parents to meet, heh.

“President King led the way in political correctness, creating a comprehensive Glossary of Forbidden Speech.” - the Slate… http://www.doonesbury.com/strip/thecast/king.html

My understanding is that the “Glossary of Forbidden Speech” is just a copy of the Oxford English dictionary.

The students at Walden College now communicate solely by hand gestures, and those are also being closely monitored.

Hey, it’s nice to see Mike and Kim in the strip once in a while!

So nice of JJ to show up for her daughter’s big day. Oh, well, maybe I should give her the benefit of the doubt. Zeke probably got himself arrested scalping tickets or something.

So many years ago my cousin Barbara recorded this WW I poem on my uncle’s old Norelco dictating machine.

    In Flanders Fields

    by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

I’ve just been smiling over Doonesbury and Kim just smiling at Toggle. They can’t help smiling! They may not even know they’re doing it.

That kind of quiet happiness is not something you expect to find in Doonesbury. What a lovely change!

This just made my day so much brighter… astounding how GT can manage to scale the heights of political cynicism one day (not that I disagree) and still maintain such heart on other days. He’s given us such shining characters in the last year (or more?), such as Toggle and the Chaplain.

    lalalalala…. :-)

I believe he gets four years to try and turn around the mess he inherited, steb. I hardly think letting an oil company clean up the mess it created qualifies as melting down. Talk to us again in 2112. I understand the world ends then anyway.

    freeholder:

stebon’s tactic is to post late and pretend that he has the last word.

Listening to stebon is like listening to a pack of aging flatulent feral dogs. Except that the dogs make much more sense.

Stebon doesn’t like facts: Reagan + Bushx2 = $9T debt. They were very shrewd people that kept the populace distracted with distant threats. Some deregulated industries nicked in for the big bucks. Now, we’re just cleaning up the mess so the rest of the populace can find a way to make a house payment again. Nothing but good business about that. Whoa, did I get off topic! Sorry, I’ll never do that again…. Love rules.

Stebon has tactics? I thought the only thing in his planner is “Crap on GT”. He’s got it written on Post-Its all around his computer screen. He has his calendar send him daily notifications. He writes it on his palm and has to rewrite it because he keeps rubbing it off.

Why didn’t Mike and Kim ever have a kid? I guess it’s really not too late, as Kim was only born in ‘74 (Big Mac, Hold the Pickle), but Mike’s a little long in the tooth for the diapers and formula scene by now.
