First time I was in Europe, I was shocked to see daylight at 10 pm (22:00 hrs).Of course the other side is, the sun goes down by 3 pm (15:00 hrs) in the winter.

Be thankful you don’t live where there are White Nights, Calvin.

You know what’s crueler than that? When, in order to get to work on time, you have to get up when it’s dark out. And when you leave work at the end of the day, it’s dark out. Especially for those poor souls who work in an office without any windows. They hardly see daylight at all in winter. And that’s just a 9-5 job in New England.

When I was in the Army and stationed in Frankfurt, Germany I worked in the Communication Center and would work on three rotating shifts, 8am to 4pm, 4pm to Midnight, Midnight to 8am for five days each with four days off every five days. No wonder I have terrible sleeping habits.

@ orinoco womble: It isn’t that simple. Here in Berlin, we are right now one hour ahead of solar time (daylight saving time), in winter it’s nearly perfect as we are sitting on 13° E. It may be different for France – the French have moved from GMT to Central European Time (forcibly in 1940, but they have stuck to it). Considering that the West of France (Brittany) is even to the West of Greenwich and Paris just 2° E, this means that they are in winter more than one hour ahead of solar time. The same holds for Spain, Galicia is even further West than Brittany.

Poland, on the other hand, uses Central European Time as well. That means that their Eastern border is roughly 40 min. behind solar time.

In winter I get up at night And dress by yellow candle-light. In summer quite the other way, I have to go to bed by day. .

I used to feel just like that when I was his age.

In Scotland it is still light enough to walk around 11-12 oclock at night in the summer and we pay for it in the winter when if you have a 9-5 job you never see daylight…..

Here in Raleigh NC its much more even but it gets dark (and I suppose light) much faster …………..

I remember the feeling of not wanting to come in while playing outside when I was a kid. It was the “power of now” and I didn’t even know it :-)

When I was growing up(6 to 12), we lived in a neighbor where, in the summer, the kids went out after supper and played ‘night games’ until the first mother called their child in for the evening ! It was great and there was no ‘aww, Ma do we have to’ ? We were granted a great deal of freedom in those days and we knew not to take it for granted. But times were different then—how I miss them ! ! ! !

Enjoy Calvin summer break. Here in KS parts of small town schools are starting each day. One started yesterday and child was injured by driver. Schools here now have A/C. Top off a teacher shortage.
