Obviously, Newton did not discover gravity, it was around all along. What he did discover and express mathematically, is the part mass plays on how it acts. He considered his greatest discovery to be on the nature of white light (ROY G BIV and all that) rather than gravity and the laws of motion. Similarly, Darwin considered his greatest to be the agency of earthworms in the making of topsoil, rather than evolution by natural selection.
