Regarding vets treating humans, in an emergency and not being able to communicate, I would not object to a vet treating me. They know medicine and are used to treating patients who cannot speak.
I have a friend who is a DVM and specialized in animal diseases in humans. He treated people for such things as rabies, trichinosis, etc. and taught the same in a university in VZ. Great Man!

Garfield probably really did shows some compassion to Jon in this strip, he just played it safe and take no chance of getting what Jon have.
