After smoking for 25 years (3 packs a day) I quit because cigarettes went up to ¢50 per pack. Wish someone would pay me for my 25 year study. I guess capitalism is it’s own reward.

I’ve heard anecdotal evidence that getting shot in the head can shorten your life too. I wonder how many millions of tax dollars it’ll take to study that for a couple of decades to prove it!

plus4, you’re right. I can think of several such studies about topics that most of us wouldn’t think twice about.

From an old, old “Frank and Ernest” strip:

“A recently-completed $5 million government study shows that you can make pretty good money from a $5 million government study!”

(I’m paraphrasing a bit – it’s got to be almost 40 years now.)

I read an article like that not long ago. A study showing that kids are obese through a lack of exercise and eating between meals too much. Aren’t you thrilled with what our tax money goes to?

Actually, Eddie does only two of the four: smoking and drinking. I’d like to see you wrestle lahbstah traps out of the water regularly, and while we don’t see him eat much, his diet (as a generic fisherman) is probably high in fish which is “reported” to be good for heart health. And BTW, I take second to none in my disdain for the Nutrition Nazis.

What I find surprising is that if you do all of those bad things it only shortens your life by an average of 12 years. Granted that’s a lot of time, but if the life-expectancy in the UK is something like 75 years old you’d still live to be 63….Then again, at my age it’s easy to say I’d rather life fast and die young. I’m sure when I’m 62 I really won’t feel like dying yet…

And if it ain’t researched, it ain’t true! But in this country, why bother – they can’t afford to teach science in schools and nobody believes any of the findings anyway.

Hey Wyatt – I’m 62 and looking forward to many more years of dancing – which I will do til I drop.

I’m 72 and still enjoying pizza and chocolate and gin too- but it ia all about moderation. I do an hour of mostly free weights (5-15#) every other day and I hope to continue to keep myself on track. I’m always looking for activities for the alternate days ;-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~and yes, the “studies” we hear on the news are usually just as lame as that one, while they still want more taxes :-(

Right up there with the $2 million study a couple of years ago that came to the conclusion there was a link between drugs and crime.
