Radio: Today's weather...
Radio: And now for the traffic report...
Radio: Coburg Road is closed due to a two-vehicle accident involving a pickup truck and a police motorcycle. There is a fatality at the scene.
Holly: You sit, I'll dial.
Ms. Eliot wouldn’t do that to her loyal readers, would she ?Get things all set up for Val to get married and then ‘bump off’ her intended, she wouldn’t do that would she ?
My husband is a delivery driver. I know exactly, from experience, the huge wave of a very bad, bad feeling coupled with an instant panic attack while your mind tries to be factual in it’s assessments of the potential situation. I heard about my husbands accident from the news on the radio right before the hospital called. Very, very scary & unnerving.
Since this is comic verse I fully expect Phil to be involved. He has a broken leg or arm (or maybe something more serious that requires surgery and some serious fretting in the hospital waiting room.) The fatality is the truck driver who died from a heart attack at the wheel and that’s what caused the accident. The worry will make Val realize that she wants to spend her life with Phil no matter how long or short that might be and they set a wedding date.
@snarkm: I like your take on it, and think you’re likely right. @IndyMan: That’s one of my pet peeves with mystery writers. They take volumes to set up the romance; then, once the wedding is set, they kill off the groom. (It may happen with brides, too; just not in series that I’ve read.) I consider it to be cheating; and they’d better come up with a darned good substitute, or I quit reading. GRRR.
My daughter had a motorcycle for 2 years before I found out about it. She took a year off from U between sophomore and junior years. So I had 2 years of worrying to catch up on. Well, she may someday find out about things like that when her boys are older. (Incidentally, the motorcycle was sold years ago. Phew!)
Well, this is just great! I got all lumped up when I read the strip, and now I’m all teary-eyed. Have gotten too involved with GoComics . . . Holly’s thoughtfulness had something to do with it.
I dated a police officer when I was “between husbands”. Been happily married for forty years, and I still freeze when there’s a news report that a policeman has been killed or injured.
NO! Not possible. Well, possible but NO! please? This is a comic strip..it’s supposed to be a break from the harsh edge of reality. right? I can’t wait for tomorrow…hopefully a laugh and not a lesson..maybe both…hmmmm
Phil’s NOT dead, probably wasn’t even there. But he would know the officer involved. It could have a major effect on him and maybe have him reconsider the marriage to avoid her from receiving bad news about him.
@1955Sidecar—Very simple: doesn’t matter if the car hits the motorcycle or the motorcycle hits the car—the motorcycle loses. And too many cars are careless around bikes. Mothers worry.
Comics are intended to be humorous. There is nothing funny about this one – whether or not you are familiar with the characters. I have dropped Stone Soup from my favorites list.
someone is dead at the scene of the accident no one said that the cop is the one dead! relax every body it is probably the driver of the truck had a heart attack and lost control of his or her vehicle… Now the next cliff hanger is Phil badly hurt probably nothing wrong with him he just got off his bike nd put in on the road to block traffic and his name tag fell off please relax we cannot have mr wonderful die too many people lives would be ruined and I am not talking about Val and her daughters…. if the show fit wear it try to relax and have a great day planning what to wear the day of the wedding!!!!

Well, it took me a minute. But come on. There is no way they are going to get that morbid in a comic strip.

You don’t spend many years building up a character only to bump him off like this. Unless you’re Alfred Hitchcock.
