CCoghlan: We used to read to our three children at bedtime. We read young children’s books, then we rread older children’s books; reread the entire Harry Potter series every time a new book or movie came out; and when the little bu- sorry, when the little darlings got me frustrated enough to (want to) beat them, I would open a Bible at semi-radnom, and read that until they fell asleep in self-defence.

We’d read for sometimes 15 minutes, and sometimes over an hour. Sometimes we read until they were asleep, and sometimes until we were. But it helped them sleep, and taught them to love reading.

And they DO love reading: Youngest Son, at 13, has read Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, and Robert Forward on his own.

I would find my middle boy asleep on the floor, head and shoulders out in the hall, and rest of body under the rug, especially when we had company.

Mythreesons sounds like Zitts. When mine where little I would read to them but my oldest wouldn’t stay in bed long. His sister when she was a baby growning up just the opositie she let me know when she was ready for bed and fall asleep fast. Got a little older that change but would not bother us. I wonder if the light is turned off except a night light. I too have a husband like Wally who could fall asleep fast. I asked him how he does that since I can’t.

We would read (as they got older, they would read) and then they would get in bed. I would sit in the rocker and read to myself until they fell asleep.

Kept me up to date in reading and prevented them from getting out of bed. Granted we didn’t have company often.

Though, as with Kab Buch’s daughter, my younger one had no trouble falling asleep. The only kid I ever met who would go take a nap without being told.

How to handle a restless child: Step one: line a closet with velcro. Step two: sew child a matching velcro body suit. Step three: lock child in closet.

If he’s awake all night, keep him awake all the next day. Don’t let him nap. He’ll sleep the next night, I guarantee!

I used to sit with the kid and tell her about how life was when I was her age. Worked within minutes…

When my mother couldn’t fall asleep, we would tell her to read her sociology textbook. Worked like a charm!
