it is with some trepidation that i wish a joyous celebration to all who are joyously celebrating this weekend including the celebration of the lunar eclipse and 5 o’clock (just covering my derriere)
Remember Newton Minnow calling TV a “vast wasteland? in 1961” That was when there were 3 networks. Now with so much content needed to fill the huge amount of space available it’s only logical that there might be some pretty awful stuff, lots of recycled themes. So what? Don’t watch. (Little known fact; the boat in Gilligan’s Island was sardonically named after him for his “elitist” comment about junk on TV. Hah!)
I think Robert A. Heinlein once remarked that there’s no such thing as an original storyline —only a handful of ideas that go back to the ancient Greeks if not further.
Seems to me that Jules Verne and H.G. Wells would be the ones to sue Ellison for copyright infringement. Of course Verne died in 1905 and I don’t know if international copyright law was life + 70 at that time. Wells published The Time Machine in 1895, and he died in 1946. Ellison wasn’t born until 1934, so no matter what, he still couldn’t claim copyright (or patent right) for those ideas.

Mighty Mouse once said they call TV a “medium” because nothing on it is rare or well done.

A Christian Century reviewer said Sound of Music should have been sued twice: by the Catholic Church for liable, and by Walt Disney for plagiarism.
