The Bystander Then: a person with a ladder runs to save someone from a burning building. The Bystander Now: a person sees someone in a burning building and stops to record it on his cell phone.
What, did smart phones exist when people watched Kitty Genovse get killed and did nothing?
Please, the majority of bystanders do nothing in most cases throughout the entirety of history. Blaming it on trends is misdirection. Like saying videogames cause school shootings or heavy metal leads to satanic sacrifices.
30+ years ago, my friend lost a tire on his motorcycle dumping him and his lady. While the rest of us were assessing injuries, a dumb ass Yuppie pulled over and started taking photos of them; didn’t offer help, not even a band aid. He left before I could verbally (or physically) stomp him. Times haven’t changed all that much. The indifference is more visible, though.
So common that even the instructors in the CPR class will tell you that when you begin CPR, you will get nowhere if you just yell: “Someone call 911.” If you don’t point to someone and assign that person the task of calling 911, it won’t happen. Sad that people will not get involved unless they feel like they have no choice.

This cartoon would work better for me if he was facing the other way and taking a selfie of himself with the fire in the background.

dzw: had the experience many times of folks takng pictures instead of helping, that was a long time ago, and still true.
Play one: yes, one MUST TELL SOMEONE to move on that call.
Which is the real sadness of the ‘toon, those who have a PHONE and don’t think to use that before they use the camera in it
