    Hate to be picky, but no radio would have a spring in it like that. The inductor coils are never wound up tight so they would suddenly uncoil like that.

    When I was little and the world was big I odored a kit and built a small crystal radio. It even worked.

    Dunno about the drug stores, but Radio Shack used to have tube testers.

    Where I grew up, all the grocery stores also had tube checkers. Heck, even car radios, as well as TVs, had electron tubes then.

    The most common place for tube checkers was the local drug store. My first entry into electronics was as a radio & TV repairman in 1961…
