It takes at least a week just to get the idea of the homework to sink into the brain….so writing? pfft – that will take days, weeks even. or end up doing an all nighter. Go to school with bloodshot eyes and hopefully something brilliant to submit.

If he’d put all that eloquence into his paper, there’d be no problem.

I remember inserting the following into an exam essay on Matthew Arnold, re: his writings on craftsmanship: “It’s a good thing Dr Arnold died before the advent of Tupperware; if not, there’s a strong probability he would have died soon after.” The professor wrote in the margen: “Baloney, pure and unadorned.”

    I bet I was right.

I used to be a craftsman who sewed shoes by hand, punching each hole individually by hand and sewing the leather together with string and needles by hand. In our quality control office there was a sign that said “Why is there never enough time to do it right, but always time to do it over?”. A good question that I never could come up with a good answer for!!

Let’s see……….. 74 words containing 112 syllables……. Could this be a new 3-panel record, even for Calvin?Wait a minute. Hold everything. Here is another Calvin dissertation on how we are sacrificing craftsmanship for efficiency, from three years earlier:Click here (or stretch image below): Calvin and Hobbes (February 16, 1992)Click here: Peanuts (March 9, 1962)Click here: Peanuts (December 12, 1962)

I’m going to side with Calvin today. Also, let us not confuse precision with craftsmanship! They are not always one and the same…

Papers assigned are dead end work with no or negative rewards. Procrastination has no punishment that exceeds the stress and effort of producing the assignment.I was having problems with traffic issues while getting to school and was able to identify problems and contrast various solutions to resolve them as an assignment . I listened to the instructor say in his amazement that someone had submitted a paper, a first for him, with real issues. I sent copies to various city and state bureaus and five major changes were implemented. I only got a B on the paper.

jadoo823,Them’s (they are) my sentiments, too! Thank you for the response. However, “Nothing from nothing is nothing”.Calvin accordingly did half of nothing on each of the two days allotted time. That’s not a(l)lot. “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”

I would love to see a conversation between grown up Calvin and Mrs. Wormwood. Probably a lot of apologizing by Calvin for being a big pain in the a…. um… ah…really big pain.

The mud monster was a procrastinator. She still is….

I’d be sitting in the recliner watching something interesting, if not particularly important when she’d come downstairs and ask me to help her prepare a report. For tomorrow morning. And it was about 2230 now….

So, off I’d go, and we’d get started. Fortunately, she had some of the preliminary work done. Then trying to finish it while my wife is standing in the doorway screaming at her to go to bed

Although the urgency largely vanished, I was still helping her – typing and proofreading stuff she was doing for College, via pcAnywhere, until she graduated. At least the wife wasn’t yelling anymore….
