Note to customers: Don’t write “Fragile” or “Don’t bend” on a package. Just pack it better… plus get the insurance.

This is so true. I bought a small safe, but it weighed quite a bit. When delivered, and I opened, it was cracked. So I returned, and got another. When it arrived, the corner was smashed. I figure the driver was alone and couldn’t pick it up so they just pushed it off the truck (I could see scuff marks on the outside of the box too).

sighhh we ship hundreds of pkgs daily from our warehouse and there’s not a week that goes by that I dont have to track, trace, or report damages to either UPS or FedEx. Today’s strip will definitely get printed out and hung in a prominent place in our office!

The solution to this problem is to lose UPS and use USPS. I have it on reliable authority that when dealing with fragile packages, they always throw them underhand.

I shipped a computer via UPS, insured it for $400. They smashed it and gave me a very hard time before paying. It turns out that UPS now only insures up to $100. If you buy more insurance UPS offloads it to another company who also gives a hard time paying.

Worked in shipping and receiving often during career. Common practice is for one person in the delivery truck to throw boxes to the other person in the warehouse, who would try to catch them. Sometimes, to keep things interesting, the thrower would flip the box so it spun crazily to the “catcher.” If a box was marked “Fragile”, he simply yelled “Fragile” before throwing it.

interesting – i shipped tens of thousands of boxes over a 10 year period and never had to file a claim or have any damage that reached the contents in the boxes. the boxes contained 1 to 5 computer keyboards and so were of a handy size to ‘chuck’ or drop etc. the only time i had any ‘serious’ concern was one time when an open palette from the manufacturer of the keyboards came into customs with a rip along one side obviously done by a careless airport forklift operator. but he only messed up the outside of the boxes.-all that to say i guess i am the guy that caused you all to get the ‘bad’ percentage of shipment damage because i never had any- the carrier i used for over 10 years?-UPS

I’ll put in a plug for USPS “Click n Ship”, both for convenience and price. I’ve had couple of small claims over the years, both as shipper and receiver, but all settled quickly and painlessly. Never had a problem with the others, just that USPS has made it so easy.

I had a box of hard drives from Newegg thrown into my yard, at least 6 feet, with crumpling and tearing of the box. Newegg was very courteous and efficient about providing free return and replacement right away, but the next time I had them delivered to my work site.

With USPS, I’ve had way too many letters and packages that simply disappeared. On two occasions, a half-dozen items mailed at the same time disappeared; one set finally arrived six months later – which isn’t so good with a stack of checks for bill payments that I already replaced – and the other never reappeared. A more recent problem is that the mail carrier for my home cannot tell the difference between Elm Street and Elmore Street.(They’re parallel and one block apart.)

The electronics factory where I work often ships and receives around 20 packages a day by UPS, with very few problems. UPS to my home is a problem, because UPS whisks it across country, then hires USPS to deliver to the home – with that same mail carrier…

Just to point this out. Rat says he works for the shipping company NOT the transport company (FEDEX, UPS,USPS). He is sending things out broken.

I suppose one could make a point of hand-delivery of all personal stuff, skipping over Rat or any other middleman. To be sure, that does sort of eat up one’s free time….

I know I’m late here, but just wanted to unload one story. I had a couple of iPhones shipped home, and with great trepidation, authorized Fedex to leave them since nobody would be home. The driver was smart enough to leave them behind a bush where they couldn’t be seen from the street. The UPS driver? Not so smart, he left his box right by the door. Anybody inclined to steal one would have gotten both.
