Why couldn’t it have been one of the five right wingers instead?

Eh. They’ll piss and moan about his first choice, and then confirm his second or third nominee. SOP.

And when Bush was in office, this was a stunningly accurate picture of the very Democrats who are whining about it now.

I certainly hope the republicans learned from the Democratic actions on Bork, Alito and Roberts.

    Alito yea 58 nay 42

    Bork yea 42 nay 58

    Ginsberg yea 96 nay 3

    Breyer yea 87 nay 9

    Roberts yea 78 nay 22

    Thomas yea 52 nay 48

    Souter yea 90 nay 9

    Stevens yea 99 nay 0

Note the pattern when Democrats oppose a nominee?

    Motive They lose?

    Bork?

BTW, he would have been a terrible libertarian justice.

The Republicans supported Ginsberg and Breyer with their votes in contradistinction to the Democrats and Republican nominees.

The Dems threatened a filbuster over judicial nominations hence the gang of 14.

Wouldn’t want to miss a chance. And, it seems Stevens was a Republican – just a decent one.

I have to agree with David on this one…but still wish it were a justice that voted to repeal McCain-Feingold
