In panel 4, it sounds like Hobbes has a plant in his audience.

I could get you the remote, but making smart remarks at your expense is much more fun than waiting on you hand and foot.

For those not yet aware of all the wonderful things Google can do, do a Google search of Bulgarian English translator or Chinese English translator or any other language and enter the phrase you want to read. It’s magic.

I think the important thing here is that Calvin’s mom can understand Hobbes he was hers first! So …

@Granny Grump: Actually, Hobbes didn’t belong to Calvin’s mom first. That’s some speculation that has circulated around the Internet, but it is not from the comic strips.

It used to not be very accurate — is it better now? I was always afraid to use it for fear I’d find myself engaged to a sumo wrestler :O(

Calvin is probably still waiting for a god show to come on. There hasn’t been many on TV since this strip first ran.

No, but there were a number of people who were either in fact or in fantasy expressing confusion about the meanings of the foreign language posts. (a) I was trying to tip them to a source to end their confusion; and (b) “it’s magic” refers to an old cartoon, possibly in Playboy in the 60’s, possibly not, where a student was writing a very complex formula on a classroom chalkboard and a critical point in the formula made a reference to “and then a miracle occurs” to allow him to get to the conclusion, to which the professor evaluating his work commented that more detail was required. Those not as old as I may never have seen the cartoon, and some who had and some who hadn’t might have laughed at that point. This discourse merely proves that if you have to explain a joke to someone, he or she will probably never find it funny. Have you heard the one about the prison lifers who gave a number to every joke ever told? But, nevermind. You can find it with Google.

Cheers …

GT produces what you might call a rough draft, which will likely require extensive editing. The instruction booklet in the box with your new electronic toy, digital camera, or whatever, willgive a good idea of the sort of results you will probably get on the first pass. It’s a starting point, but that’s all. That said, it IS better than it was a decade ago. Caveat: it is still no goodwith idiomatic expressions - it may give you a literal translation which will be totally incomprehensible to a native speaker. E.g., kick the bucket, queer as a three-shilliing note, gone west, bought the farm &c&c&c
