Bleak day!

12/7 & 9/11 were sad days indeed. A few bad apples can bring so much misery for so many.

Thanks for showing us the realities of this day, Brian. Your perspective is true, and profoundly sad.

My Grandparents/Parents remember 12/7/41, Me, my siblings and cousins remember 9/11/01. Both were bleak days indeed.

I was only 5 when this life changing never forgotten event happened. I couldn’t begin to understand how it effected the US until older and hearing the experience of people, in the service, who were there, and in the armed services.

And yet, this is my anniversary! My husband and I are married 23 years today. Something good to temper the bad. :)

Anyone interested in some lesser known accounts of bravery, Google “Taffy Three” and the “US 26th Cavalry”.Those two battles/campaigns will make you proud of our fathers.

As I sit here and watch, it seems that the older this country gets, and as more who were alive then pass on, the less we tend to remember this important event in our history. And I find that incredibly sad. :-(

My two uncles were in the Navy; Uncle Bill is gone now, but Uncle Jim is still alive. My father was in the Army Air Corps, the precursor to the Air Force; he’s no longer here. My Mom was in the Army Nurse Corps; she also is gone. I’m a Vietnam Era Veteran; this happened long before I was born.

Many thanks for your wonderful tribute today.

I had two favorite stories from my mother; one was about the Hurricane of ‘38 and the other was about Pearl Harbor. The family had gone to Mass and she and her mother were walking to a friend’s house when someone threw open an upstairs window and called the news down to them. Later in the afternoon, they all got together and went to church—not for a service, just to pray. I can almost see it; the older church, the dark wood pews, the scent of hot wax and incense, the flickering candles, people softly crying…

I will always remember reading the sermon that Peter Marshall gave to the Midshipmen at Anapolis the morning of Dec 7, 1941. Before the attack happened, he talked about death to these young men. On his way home, he heard about the attack on his car radio.

If anyone is interested in this, or about Rev. Peter Marshall, read “A Man Called Peter”. Some of his sermons are in the book.

Sharp intake of breath mixed with gratitude for this remembrance. I know a very elderly woman who is still here who bears witness of what she saw that day.

Yours was the only comic strip in the Sunday Houston Chronicle that addressed the Attack on Pearl Harbor. Thank you…shame on them. It should never be forgotten.
