From our side of the planet the paranoia people have in the USA towards Ebola seems so disproportionate to the risk and yet there is an acceptance of 30 000+ deaths per annum by hand guns?!?Here in Australia owning a handgun is major deal and of course no semi-automatic guns. As for Ebola… well there is fear and then there are facts. Cartoonists have to come up with something though… and Ebola touches the primitive fear nerve.
“Seems, the “infallible” containment procedures the bureaucrats are always bragging about are about as effective.”Procedures are only as good as the humans following them. Did the hospital staff follow proper containment procedures? Did the hospital give it’s staff adequate training? Never mind that, it must be Obama’s fault.
How did that gun ban/confiscation work out for Australia? Criminals are making their own now. And I can honestly say that they will never be capable of ratifying a constitutional amendment to strip us of our 2nd amendment rights. Presidents have been shot and killed by unbalanced individuals, and there still was no support for a ban on them. It is too much a part of our culture, and too many people own firearms, and would rather go down surrounded by a pile of warm brass than hand them over willingly. Disarming a society, and criminalizing ownership, is how you effectively lay the groundwork for a tyrant to take power. Nazi Germany was a perfect example. As to the point of the ‘toon, I know that people are in a tizzy about this. The problem we are facing is not Ebola… it’s the credibility of the CDC at stake. They say the disease is not contagious until you start showing symptoms, but I don’t believe it because the government is not a reliable source of information any more. I have no faith that what they are telling me is true. And I’m not just laying this at the history of the Obama administration flat-out lying, I’m speaking about the federal government as a whole and its patterned behavior of concealing information, or misleading us. And people wonder why I want less government? eyeroll
In a week of coverage over the single Ebola death, and two infected, over 700 people in the U.S. were killed by guns, about the same by cars, about the same by influenza, and over 600 by slips and falls!
The panic over Ebola, replacing the image of ISIL members taking over D.C., Los Angeles, and maybe Boise, shows we do need an amendment to the Constitution:
First, you link to gun suicides, not homicides, and the number for 2010 was 19,990. Using the same source, the number of gun homicides for 2010 was 11,068. While @ColinJames said “death…by hand guns”, and the CDC numbers don’t specify type of firearm, that is over 30,000 deaths by firearm. @ColinJames did NOT say over 30,000 homicides.
As for Ebola, more people will die this year from the flu. Has everyone had their flu shot? Have you not had a flu shot, and are in a tizzy about Ebola? Human beings are absolutely horrible at risk assessment. We’d rather believe in a boogie man than take steps to lessen actual risks.

All reports show greater than 30,000 deaths by gun in the US in each of 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
