Someone please tell me what it means that the Saudis don’t participate more? Do they intend to pick up the pieces afterwards? Do they depend on the Islamic holy sites within their country to ward off major attacks? Are their investments so diversified that they can abandon the area easily? Do others depend so deeply on their investments that they are compelled to protect the Saudis (Too Big To Fall?) Is their land so generally arid that nothing is worth conquering except a few cities?.From my cultural standpoint, I do not understand. What will that region be like after the oil is gone? Probably nomads and their herds, again, unless radioactivity makes it completely uninhabitable.
Why are the areas around the Mideast so irresistible to conquerors?.First it was for access to fertile food-growing regions. Then it was for trade routes to other empires and the sea. Then it was for religious reasons. Then it was for oil. What excuse will be the final one left?.Location, location, location: It’s a good thing or a bad thing.
