Yes, nowadays, being “the female one” is no longer considered a personality trait for purposes of ensembles. There are still creators who haven’t got the memo, but most instances are legacies from franchises made decades ago.

Isn’t it ironic that Regular Shplourk would make an ideal protagonist but if you were playing a videogame and had multiple characters to choose from you’d almost never pick him? I call this the Super Mario Bros. 2 effect. Also, I almost forgot about the ‘u’ in Shplourk. Of course it was there, it’s a European comic.
