Despite yesterday’s Sunday Peanuts strip from 1958 instead of 1967, we are in the week long sequence of the 1967 Peanuts Halloween/Great Pumpkin strips.

OK, we have been hearing about the Great Pumpkin for years. Just where did Linus get the idea of the GP in the first place?

I never thought of Schultz as a “religious nut”. He obviously had a church background and occasionally included biblical quotes in his strip, but he wasn’t fanatical about it.

Schultz once said that Linus represented his spiritual side. He also explained that when he came up with the Great Pumpkin, he had been thinking about what would happen if a child got one holiday ahead of himself, and began expecting presents on Halloween instead of Christmas. He considered it one of his most original ideas, and apparently was quite proud of it.

Where are you getting the idea that Schulz was a “religious nut”? It is true that he had been raised a Lutheran and been active in both the Church of God and teaching Sunday School in a United Mthodist Church, but that doesn’t by any stretch of the imagination make him a “religious nut,” and in fact over the years his views changed. He made this statement in the 1980s: “I do not go to church anymore… I guess you might say I’ve come around to secular humanism, an obligation I believe all humans have to others and the world we live in.” Unless everyone who has some religious views is categorized as a “religious nut” it is unfair to so categorize Charles Schulz.
