I think the Governor will be found not guilty. No doubt that he and his family were showered with gifts from a person who has testified he provided those gifts and loans with the expressed purpose of getting the governor’s help with launching and promoting his product. But prosecution has to prove that Mr. Williams (the giver and loaner) actually received the governor’s help, and I don’t believe they were able to prove that.
There is a very stinky appearance of impropriety, but when the dust settles, I don’t think impropriety can be proven. Regardless, I would be surprised if Mr. McDonnell’s formerly-rising star will be able to resurrect itself. He should be happy, though: beats prison.
