Calvin: "Hey, dad, I'm inventing a robot. Can you get me a patent?" Dad: "You invented a robot?" Calvin: "Well, here is it so far. Hobbes and I ahve been working on it all afternoon. It's not quite perfected yet, but you get the idea" Dad: "Hmm....what does it do?" Dad: "That's the problem. We haven't figured out how to make it do what we want" Dad: "Don't get discouraged. Your mom and I got the same results after working on YOU for six YEARS" Calvin: "Har har. My attorney is a comedian"

Calvin’s dad is my favorite dad of all time. I must admit that I patterned some of my answers to my children after his. On the up side, my children have great senses of humor. It didn’t take long before they came back with some very Calvinesque replies.

Calvin’s robot reminds me of the soup I made when I was VERY young (pre-first grade). One afternoon I told my mother I wanted to make soup and she asked me what I needed. So I asked for the big bowl I’d seen her make stuffing in, filled with water, and a bunch of spices. I diligently stirred the spices into the water but like Calvin, I couldn’t figure out how to make it soup.
