The kind that would not keep a child from being with his parents, or, in Elian’s case, his only surviving parent. The Gonzalez case was about a parental kidnapping — the child’s mother violated custody and nearly drowned her son, and he was returned to his father. Letting immigrant kids stay with their parents here while working out their status is completely consistent with that policy.

Clearly the conservative approach is to pack all the kids and the other 12 million immigrants on a bus and immediately send them back to where ever they came from. However they won’t spend any money to straighten out the system that is supposed to do all this. They did figure out how to reimburse Rick Perry for the National Guard stunt however.

It looks to me like the pols are deliberately trying to bankrupt the country to stop all entitlements; I agree with that, but I don’t like the means.

“Those illegal immigrant kids that are coming in now are coming in without their parents. We need to send those kids back!”Which is illegal to do before we give each of them a hearing because of the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008, the bi-partisan bill that was unanimously passed by Congress and signed into law by Bush.

On seeing Payne’s cartoon, I logged on to post a comment pointing out the ignorance it showed. I was pleased to see that others had already done so. Elian was to be returned to his only surviving parent, his father from whom he’d been kidnapped by his mother who wasn’t happy with the custody decision and chose to subject Elian to a life-threatening boat trip to Florida. He was never in any danger of being abused, forced into slavery or being a child soldier, or killed. Yes, he should have been returned to his father and there would have been no controversy over it but for the Right’s paranoia over the failed communist regime in Cuba. The situation with the children from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador is completely different. Only someone suffering from a blinding political agenda and disrespectful of his audience would suggest that the cases are symmetric.

Ok Michael wme, Elian should have gone back to Cuba, because they’re communist doesn’t mean they’re violent. If you have read anything lately Cuba is changing. Honduras is the most violent country in the world and neither Guatamala nor El Salvador are very peaceful, mostly because drug cartels, but their governments are not helping any either. T%hose children are refugees not immigrants. Michael wme you seem to run on anger only, not knowledge or logic.

dear dhubin Elian was not kidnapped by his mother // the seed donor had nothing to do with the child until cuba officials decided to make news splash by having him claim the child // Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador are no more dangerous now than 10 years ago// the 1 st lady of Guatemala says the families brake up was caused by promise made by bho

Oh and planes would probably get them back to their country quicker than buses.

“…. planes would be quicker…” …and cheaper, too? You sure like spending “other peoples money”.
