That fairy tale wolf had just eaten the former wearer of that clothing—which makes him plenty fierce and scary! Besides, he didn’t “prance around the woods”—he lay in wait, hiding in a darkened room—more scariness.
We had a red cape, so on Halloween each year one of us siblings had to wear it and carry a picnic basket for our trick-or-treat costume as Little Red Riding Hood. One year it was my turn, and luckily as a clueless young boy it didn’t phase me.
When I was Ruthie’s age, I got introduced to both sides. I had a book of “Peter and the Wolf” that made the wolf look really scary, but then I saw a live-action video and thought, “That looks like a cute dog.”

It’s so sad that wolves are portrayed as scary and evil. They are beautiful and intelligent animals.

Read “Never Cry Wolf” by Farley Mowatt, and “The Neighbors Are Annoying My Wolves” by Jack Douglass…

…and as the wolf will tell you, “I seldom prance.”

Wolves are scary under certain circumstances because you can’t have five wolves and one sheep voting on what to have for dinner.
